
DEPARTMENT OF SPEECH & LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY (SLP)
Working with the full range of human communication and its disorders, speech-language pathologists evaluate and diagnose speech, language, cognitive- communication and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly. The Speech & Language Pathologist evaluates and treats children and adults with speech and language problems. These problems are varied but frequently include difficulty with pronouncing words, comprehending and expressing language, stuttering and aphasia (language impairment following a stroke). They develop appropriate treatment goals and activities related to the specific needs of clients, and to identify equipment or materials that would be used in treatment of patients.
The practice of speech-language pathology includes prevention, diagnosis, habilitation, and rehabilitation of communication, swallowing and other upper aero-digestive disorders. It also entails elective modification of communication behaviors; and enhancement of communication.
Throughout the world, Speech and Language Pathologist are actively engaged in research to enhance knowledge about human communication processes. They supervise and direct public school or clinical programs and assist in developing new methods and products to evaluate and treat speech language disorders.

The medically oriented B.Sc. (Hons) Speech Language Pathology offered at FMH-IAHS prepares skilled clinicians who are committed to excellence in the delivery to Speech Language Pathology Services in the health care facilities and other professional settings. Located in an academic health care environment, the program draws on unique and clinical resources to teach the skills required by Speech Language Pathologist as they expand their role in health care settings including hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Medically oriented education and training are enriched by integration of resources from faculty of Allied Health Sciences and professional practice.
Associated Department in Medical College/FMH
Speech & Language Pathology Department at FMH, along with the complete setup of ENT, Psychiatry, Paediatric, Psychology and Audiology department provides clinical training to the students of this course. The purposefully built Department of Speech & Language Pathology is one of its kinds in Pakistan. It is providing services to children and adults. Equipped with the latest technology, the cubicles in the department provide an optimum structured environment to practice speech skills. The Department is headed by Consultant Speech Language Therapists and is assisted by Senior Speech Therapists. The services are provided both in groups and on individual basis.
The Speech & Language Pathology Department is fully equipped with the educational gadgets. Latest Speech Assessment & Evaluation are used for a smooth learning of new speech & language skills. The Speech Therapy Department is supported by a Professional Audiology Department at FMH that provides Audiological assessment, fitting of hearing aids.
Career Opportunities once you graduate
Speech Language Pathologist work in hospitals, private clinics, nursing care facilities, home health care services, individual and family services, outpatient care centers, schools, universities. Speech-Language Pathologists often work as part of a team, including teachers, physicians, audiologists, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation counselors and parents. Corporate speech-language pathologists also work with employees to improve communication with their customers. There are numerous specialization courses, in various areas of Human Communication that are available worldwide. MS-SLP, M. Phil. and PhD programs are also available for a graduate who is pursuing higher studies. Speech and Language pathologists are also eligible to apply for foreign and local scholarships for higher studies offered by the Higher Education Commission, Govt. of Pakistan.
