DEPARTMENT OF OPTOMETRY AND ORTHOPTICS (OPT)

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) defines optometry as a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated and regulated (licensed/registered), and optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system”.

Associated Department in Medical College/FMH:

The Eye Department at Fatima Memorial Hospital provides clinical placement and training to the Optometry students.

Career Opportunities Upon Graduation:

Optometrists can find employment opportunities in general supervised or self-practice and teaching or research facilities. They can specialize in sports vision and contact lenses or vision therapy. Others work exclusively with children, elderly, or people who require unique devices to see. Optometrists with their own clinics are also responsible for office business and duties. Further studies opportunities include M.Sc., M. Phil. and PhD programs available worldwide. *Optometrists should not be confused with Ophthalmologists. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who perform eye surgery as well as diagnose and treat eye diseases and injuries.
