DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY (MLT)
Medical Laboratory Technology is a profession that combines the challenges and rewards of medicine with laboratory science. Medical laboratory Technologists perform complex and varied laboratory analysis, and use critical thinking skills in determining the accuracy and validity of test results. They recognize the interdependency of testing information and possess the knowledge of physiologic and pathologic conditions affecting results in order to support medical decisions. In diverse health care settings, clinical laboratory scientists provide test results used by such practitioners as physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants, in determining: the presence, extent, and causes of disease; monitoring therapy; and evaluating testing protocols to ensure optimum and safe public health applications.
Associated Departments in Medical College / FMH
The first professional year includes the role of basic sciences departments like Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Psychiatry and Computer Sciences. The Pathology Department with all associated Clinical Laboratories is attached with this program for Clinical Training in further three professional years. The FMH Clinical Laboratories also participate in providing clinical training for the second, third and final year students. The labs are well equipped with modern and sophisticated instruments, having qualified and well trained staff, working in heavy workload of specimens, covering all aspects of a pathology laboratory
Clinical Settings/Attachments for MLT clinical learning
Clinical laboratories of First class tertiary care hospitals with latest laboratory facilities are attached with this program for Clinical Training. These departments possess modern, high-tech equipment to boost diagnostic capacity in all clinical disciplines.
Career Opportunities:
Educational
There are numerous opportunities for a student to continue his/her education after completing the B.Sc. MLT degree. These are;
M.Phil in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) at the University of Health Sciences Lahore.
Phil. in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Hematology, Molecular Biology and Immunology from Punjab University, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore, Karachi University, NIH Islamabad, University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi, and Baqai Medical University Karachi and many other public and private sector universities in Pakistan and abroad.
Lab Technologists are also eligible to apply for the foreign and local scholarships for higher studies offered by the Higher Education Commission, Govt. of Pakistan
Professional
Demand for clinical laboratory scientists is outstanding. Today there is a greater demand than supply of trained clinical laboratory scientists. Graduates have a wide choice of practice settings: hospitals, independent laboratories, clinics, public health facilities, forensic crime laboratories, sales and marketing of diagnostic instruments and reagents, federal and state regulatory agencies, and research and development of future clinical tests and instruments. In addition, a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science provides an excellent background for admission to other professional programs, such as Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Podiatry. Laboratory Technologists are also highly demanding in their professional career in Pakistan. The Govt of Pakistan offers BS-17 to fresh graduate Lab Technologists, which further move to higher scales with education and experience.
