B.Sc. (Hons.) Medical Laboratory Technology

B.Sc. (Hons.) Medical Laboratory Technology is a four years degree program in FMH Institute of Allied Health Sciences which is affiliated with University of Health Sciences (UHS). Through this degree program, students will study science of anatomy, human physiology, biochemistry, chemical pathology, haematology, histopathology, cytopathology, microbiology and molecular biology with lab practice.  Medical Laboratory Technology is a profession that combines the challenges and rewards of medicine with laboratory science. Affiliation with Fatima Memorial Hospital (FMH), Hijaz Hospital, Khair-un-Nisa Hospital, Al-Nasar Lab and Allama Iqbal Medical College will provide hands on training to students in the field of laboratory technology. They recognize the interdependency of testing information and possess the knowledge of physiologic and pathologic conditions affecting results in order to support medical decisions. Under the supervision of clinical faculty, students perform their lab rotations to attain practical knowledge and hands on practice in different departments includes phlebotomy, haematology, blood banking, molecular biology, chemical pathology and histopathology departments.

There are distinct advantages to any student opting to pursue B.Sc. (Hons.) Medical Laboratory Technology program. These are;

  1. Laboratory Technology is a fast-track medical profession – the degree program takes only four years to complete, and upon completion, these professionals have opportunity to enter multifarious careers.
  2. A wide variety of options is available to the students ranging from career in hospital labs to sales and marketing, and pharmaceuticals to veterinary and agriculture labs.
  3. Recruitment of health professionals is soaring in the Gulf Countries and Saudi Arabia. There is a great demand of Medical Technologists in Germany, Canada, USA and various European Countries.
  4. Laboratory Technologists are in very high demand world over. It is one of the fastest growing professions all over the world as due to population growth, the disease burden is increasing. As a result, sophisticated technology in medical labs is being utilized to not only detect the disease but also monitor the treatment outcomes.

Unlike other professions, the infrastructure required to train a laboratory technologist is highly sophisticated, and requires specialized centers where modern laboratory equipment and related paraphernalia is adequately provided. Appropriately, qualified faculty, who can impart appropriate training to the trainees, with relevant experience is also a pre-requisite. Because of these factors, there are only a limited number of training slots available for Laboratory Technologists in Pakistan.

As a Result, there has always been a shortage of qualified Laboratory Technologists in the country, which is likely to persist for years to come.
