The pediatric department is one of the oldest unit of Fatima Memorial Hospital and one of the best in Punjab. It has been serving the children of Punjab, especially Lahore for the last 37 years. Today, the pediatric department of FMH caters to the health care needs of newborns and children, not only for Lahore, but serves as a referral center for tertiary care for the whole of Punjab. The Pediatric department serves the health needs of children ranging from newborns through infancy, toddlerhood, childhood and adolescence. The department has emerged as a leader in the provision of tertiary care. The 80 bed pediatric department consists of: Newborn ICU Newborn Intermediate Care Nursery Pediatric ICU Pediatric Medical Ward. Pediatric Emergency Room Pediatric Surgery The annual number of patients treated by the department is approximately 50,000 as outpatient while almost 3,000 patients are admitted for care every year. The Pediatric department is recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) as well as the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) to train graduates and post-graduates in the field of pediatrics.
Newborn Services Every year close to 6,000 babies are delivered at FMH. The Neonatal (Newborn) service provides state of the art nurseries for premature babies, sick newborns with all variety of diseases, and babies born following complicated pregnancies or deliveries. It is equipped with incubators, overhead warmers, ventilators, cardio-respiratory monitors, intravenous infusion pumps, and phototherapy equipment. A large number of critically sick newborns delivered at other hospitals of Lahore and Punjab are referred to FMH for further advanced treatment. The service is staffed by highly qualified senior faculty with extensive training and work experience in USA, UK and Pakistan.
Newborn Screening Services In association with INMOL, Fatima Memorial Hospital has the first and only internationally recognized New Born Screening Program for congenital hypothyroidism in the country. Screening for congenital heart disease, hearing, and eye disease in premature babies will be initiated in the near future.
Pre-natal Diagnosis and Genetic Counselling FMH is one of the very few centers in Punjab that provides pre-natal diagnosis and genetic counselling. This facility aims to diagnose inherited disorders in affected babies and, based on that knowledge, help families in future pregnancies. This service is provided by blood tests, radiological investigations, and pre-natal chorionic villous sampling.
The department offers Pediatric Out-Patient services to both general and private patients at very reasonable cost. The Pediatric Emergency Room (ER) is open 24/7 and is staffed by doctors with at least one year experience in pediatrics. An FCPS qualified Senior Registrar is available for consultation at all times. The ER is equipped to resuscitate and revive a patient whose heart has stopped beating. There are also monitors available to check the child’s oxygen level through the skin. Asthmatic children can receive medication via a nebulizer to ease their breathing. FMH has a Pediatric ICU that receives critically ill patients from all over Punjab. It is equipped with ventilators, cardio-respiratory monitors, intravenous infusion pumps and a defibrilator Children with all sorts of acute and chronic critical problems, such as seizures, coma, heart and lung problems, severe dehydration, kidney failure, and diabetic ketoacidosis are treated at this facility.
Diseases such as diabetes, growth disorders, diseases of the thyroid gland, and problems of sex differentiation, along with other hormone disorders are managed by a specialist.
Some of the blood disorders treated at FMH by a specialist including thalassemia, disorders of white blood cells and platelets, and clotting and bleeding disorders.
Pediatric Infectious Diseases
A USA trained specialist of infections in children is available at FMH. Infections due to bacteria, viruses, worms, and fungus are very common in Pakistan and account for an overwhelming number of ER visits and admission to the hospital.
Pediatric Kidney Diseases
The diseases managed by the division include urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, protein in the urine (nephrotic syndrome), acute and chronic kidney failure, high blood pressure, and disorders of electrolytes and acidbase balance. Options of peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis are available depending on the needs of the child. FMH is one of the rare institutes in Pakistan providing acute peritoneal dialysis for newborns. The division works closely with a Pediatric Urologist from the Pediatric Surgery department.
Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Neurology
Visiting consultants provide consultations to our admitted patients in these sub-specialties when needed. Diagnostic services include ECG, echocardiography, and EEG.
The department is equipped to handle all kinds of pediatric surgery cases for infants and children ranging from birth to 16 years of age. It provides cosmetic and restorative/corrective surgical facilities for congenital anomalies, general pediatric and neonatal surgery, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric neurosurgery, and pediatric urology.
Pediatric Urology deals with the disorders of children’s genitourinary systems such as posterior urethral valve, epi and hypospadias, neurogenic bladder, Wilm’s tumor, hydronephrosis and stone diseases of kidney and urinary bladder for both boys and girls ranging from birth to 16 years of age. FMH has one of the few dedicated centers for such patients. A fully trained Pediatric Urologist is responsible for providing this service.
